John Joseph (Jack) Ainsworth , a resident of Shady Lane and a former resident of East Fifth Street passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Oswego Hospital. He was 89.
John was born in Jersey Shore, PA, on January 19, 1921, the son of Frank and Margaret (Dolan) Ainsworth, and grew up in Corning, N.Y. He was a graduate of Corning Free Academy . He was a World War II veteran and a survivor of the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944,serving with the U.S. Army.
Mr. Ainsworth was a graduate of St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y., class of 1949. He received a Master’s degree from SUNY at Geneseo.
Mr. Ainsworth was a teacher and school administrator. He taught in Sherman, N.Y. and Warsaw, N.Y. prior to his employment in the Oswego City School system from 1965 to 1979
John was a member of the Corning Sports Hall of Fame for track and field, the Knights of Columbus #227 and the Elks Lodge#271. He loved sports of all kinds especially professional baseball and golf. He was a member of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Oswego.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Mary (McAndrew) Ainsworth whom he met at St. Bonaventure, three sons Paul (Mary) of Gansevoort, N.Y. John (Susan) of Eynon, PA, and Thomas (Suzanne) of Juneau, Alaska and two daughters Margaret (Starr Parmley) of Liverpool, N.Y. and Ann (Robert) Howieson of Cicero, N.Y. He has ten grandchildren, Heather Ainsworth, Bridget (Daniel) Bowen, Marissa Ainsworth, Alexandra Ainsworth, Carly (Derek) Shayka, Caitlin Howieson, John Howieson, Andrew Ainsworth, Nolin Ainsworth and Grant Ainsworth.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 from St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Oswego, East 5th Street,where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery on Rt. 481 in Oswego.
Calling hours will be held on Monday from 4 to 8 pm at the Dowdle Funeral Home at 154 East 4th Street, Oswego
